South Dakota’s seventh My Place Hotel breaks ground in Mitchell, SD

MITCHELL, SD (October 3, 2023) Cozied up on Interstate 90 in eastern South Dakota sits a small town with a big Corn Palace.

The popular tourist attraction has been a destination for many, with thousands flocking to the area to see the corn-inspired behemoth. In addition to some “corny” sights, Mitchell, S.D. is also home to former NBA basketball star Mike Miller and is a dream hunting destination, boasting spacious prairie backdrops and myriad wildlife.

Looking ahead at late Spring 2024, Mitchell will also be the home of South Dakota’s seventh My Place Hotel location. Earlier this week, construction on the four-story, 63-room hotel kicked off with a groundbreaking ceremony at the hotel’s central location, which is within walking distance to Mitchell’s impressive Cabela’s hunting and fishing store.

Joined by local dignitaries, including Mitchell’s Mayor Bob Everson, the Mitchell Chamber & Development Corporation, and Developer Bill Folkerts, the event brought together local leaders and community members alongside owners and the My Place corporate team to celebrate the groundbreaking live on site.

Folkerts, a multi-franchisee developer, highlighted the town of Mitchell and his personal collaboration with My Place Hotels, and said he looked forward to another project with Venerts Hotel Management Inc. The hotel, which will operate at 618 East Spruce Street in Mitchell, was already in its initial stages of development, overseen by Preston Robinson at Puetz Design+Build.

The hotel’s central location is sure to be a highlight for guests, with easy access off Interstate 90 giving them the ability to walk to several sporting goods and hunting stores, restaurants and grocery supercenters.

Ryan Rivett, My Place Hotels President & CEO, said he not only looked forward to seeing the project develop, but also to working closely with the people who put in the hard work to see the hotel come to life.

As we grow our footprint throughout the country, we remain focused on the fundamentals of hospitality regardless of the ever-changing world around us. People make our business in every way. From franchisees to operators and guests — it’s the people of My Place that keep us thriving.

As we approach the construction start on our seventh South Dakota location, a certain feeling of ‘home state pride’ first comes to mind. We’re a South Dakota-based company with a growing national presence, but the true foundational element of our success as a brand is based in our heritage, culture and the work ethic that stem directly from our South Dakota values. We’re very pleased to have the Mitchell ownership group break ground on this project, and as a fellow South Dakota-based company, they also share in these same common values.

“One of the most rewarding elements of our 50-year legacy in the hospitality business is that through thousands of hotels, we’ve always been a South Dakota company," Rivett added. "Our relatively small state is a great home for business, and it’s an incredible honor to be growing our presence and impact right here at home.”
